General description.
Glucose is the source of energy for the brain and with few or no mitochondrial cells. It is also a substrate of anaerobic glycolysis. The body stores glucose in the form of glycogen. In low glucose conditions, it is released from the liver and kidneys through glycogen. Glucose is also necessary for the synthesis of disaccharides oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.
Application.
D-(+)-glucose has been used in the culture of mammalian cells. It has been used to study the interaction between glucose and alanine and their effects on the activity of pentose phosphate pathway. It has been used to detect glucose tolerance in mice.
Other considerations.
Mixed terminal isomer
