Biochemical / physiological behavior.
Glucosamine is an aminosaccharide that is the precursor of hexosamine biosynthesis pathway, leading to the formation of UDP-N- acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), which is then used to prepare glucosamine glucan, proteoglycan and glycolipid. D-(+)-glucosamine inhibited the co-aggregation of Candida albicans and Streptococcus saliva.
Application.
D-(+)-glucosamine hydrochloride has been used: 1) as a standard for quantifying and expressing chitin content as glucosamine equivalent; 2) cells are stimulated with glucose in the presence of glucosamine.
