Application.
PIPES is a biological buffer, often referred to as "Good's" buffer. The pKa of PIPES is 6.8, which is close to physiological pH, which makes it an ideal choice for biological application under physiological conditions. PIPES is considered non-toxic to cultured cell lines and provides high solution transparency in a typical buffer pH.
PIPES can be used in a variety of biological applications, including as a component in culture medium formulations. Specific applications include cell culture and buffer for the production of diagnostic reagents. In addition, in animal and plant histochemistry, PIPES can also be used as a buffer to minimize lipid damage and experimental illusion caused by glutaraldehyde fixation.
