Biochemical / physiological behavior.
All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a ligand of retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and retinoid X receptor (RXR). Binding RAR and RXR can be used as transcriptional factors to regulate the growth and differentiation of normal and malignant cells. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) catalyzes 4-hydroxylation of ATRA. Retinoic acid can turn embryonic stem cells into neurons.
