General description.
Maleic acid (MA) is a dicarboxylic acid, which can be esterified with ethanol in the presence of cation exchange resin catalyst to form diethyl maleate. Its crystal structure has been analyzed. The kinetics and mechanism of isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid in the presence of cerium and bromine ions have been studied. The reaction mechanism and reactivity ratio of free radical copolymerization of maleic acid and styrene have been determined.
Application.
Maleic acid has been used to prepare trimaleate buffer and sodium maleate buffer. It is also used for the pretreatment of poplar tracheid cell wall and for spectral analysis of lignin. It can be used to synthesize superhelical acrylamide / maleic acid hydrogel.
