Overview
Biochemical / physiological behavior.
GTP can be used as phosphatase and pyrophosphatase carriers involved in the introduction of chemical energy into specific biosynthetic pathways. GTP can activate G proteins involved in a variety of cell processes including proliferation and differentiation, as well as activation of a variety of intercellular kinase cascades. Proliferation and apoptosis are partly regulated by GTP hydrolysis mediated by small GTPase Ras and Rho. Another type of small GTPase,Rab may play a role in the docking and fusion of vesicles and may also be involved in the formation of vesicles. In addition to its role in signal transduction, GTP can also be used as an energy-rich precursor of single nucleotide units in the enzymatic biosynthesis of DNA and RNA.
