Folic acid (FA) and dihydrofolate (FAH2) are substrates of dihydrofolate reductase. Dihydrofolate reductase reduces them to tetrahydrofolic acid (THF), which in turn supports the transfer of "one carbon". Tetrahydrofolic acid is necessary for the new synthesis of purines, thymidylates and various amino acids, as well as post-translational methylation (epigenetics).
