Biochemical / physiological behavior.
An effective antineoplastic drug that consumes intracellular dTTP pools by affecting pyrimidine synthesis by inhibiting thymidylate synthase. It is metabolized into ribonucleotides and deoxyribonucleotides, which can be incorporated into RNA and DNA. 5-FU treatment of cells leads to the accumulation of S-phase cells and has been shown to induce p53-dependent apoptosis.
