Carnitine is a quaternary amine found naturally in most mammalian tissues. It participates in the regulation of energy metabolism in skeletal muscle and heart, and its concentration is relatively high. It can transfer glucose metabolism from glycolysis to glycogen storage, and promote the transport of long-chain fatty acids to mitochondria, which is oxidized to produce energy in mitochondria.
