Biochemical / physiological behavior.
Cholesterol is a lipid that accounts for about 20-25% of the structural components of the cell membrane. It determines the fluidity and permeability of the membrane so that it can pass through water instead of ions and protons. Cholesterol also regulates the function of transporters and signaling proteins on the cell membrane. The main sites of cholesterol synthesis are the small intestine and liver.
The main component of all biofilms; total brain lipids contain ~ 25% cholesterol.
Points for attention in preparation.
Cholesterol monohydrate produces a clear colorless to yellowish solution in hot ethanol. It is also soluble in acetone, dioxane, ethyl acetate, benzene, petroleum ether, oils, fats and bile salts. The solution should be preserved away from light.
Application.
Cholesterol has been used to prepare immunostimulatory complexes to enhance cellular and humoral responses. It was added to animal feed to study the effects of a cholesterol-rich diet.
